REMA Debuts at Traffex 2003 to Celebrate Record Membership

Stand no C95

The Retroreflective Equipment Manufacturers Association (REMA) is celebrating record membership by exhibiting at Traffex for the first time. Membership has more than doubled in the last five years and over 30 companies are now members of this trade association for manufacturers of retroreflective traffic safety products.

“This record level of membership recognises our mission to raise the level of safety for all people working and travelling on or near our roads and highways, by encouraging all manufacturers of retroreflective products to become members of the Association,” commented Mike Mason, chairman of REMA. “The products manufactured by REMA members play an important, integral part of everyday life. The absence or non-conformity of any of these products could prove disastrous to personal safety.”

Recent issues of product compliance have highlighted the critical need for a co-ordinated voice for companies involved in the ever-changing traffic safety industry. All REMA members are bound by the Constitution to manufacture and supply products that conform fully to the latest Standards, Regulations and legislation. For the customers of REMA members, this provides a guarantee of quality and safety.

Established for nearly 30 years, REMA is recognised by most official bodies as the representative organisation for a variety of retroreflective products that are used mainly on the highway, but are also vital at airports, industrial sites and sports grounds. In many of the product areas - road cones and road studs, for example - REMA represents all the major UK manufacturers.

The Association has regular contact with Government (Department for Transport and Highways Agency), Standards Organisations (BSI and CEN), Enforcers (Police) and Users (Highways Authorities and Public Utilities). It is regularly asked to comment on official draft documents, such as TSRGD (Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions) and the Red Book (Code of Practice for Safety at Street Works).

To ensure focussed attention, expertise, representation and influence, REMA is structured with seven specialist subcommittees, each dedicated to a product group. Members belong to one or more product subcommittees. These are horizontal road markings, road studs, barriers and temporary signs, marker posts and street furniture, road cones and cylinders, high visibility clothing and safety lamps. In addition, the quality and development subcommittee is open to all members and is currently working on further improvements to quality standards in the industry.
